How to take
Take one micro-tablet daily with water, ideally with a meal. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Who should not use this
- Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; berberine can cross the placenta and pass into breast milk, and in newborns it can displace bilirubin and worsen jaundice (a risk of kernicterus)
- Speak to your doctor first if you take diabetes medication, as berberine can lower blood sugar and add to that effect (risk of hypoglycaemia); monitor your levels and do not stack it with other blood-sugar-lowering supplements without advice
- Berberine inhibits the CYP3A4 enzyme and P-glycoprotein, so it can raise blood levels of many medicines; consult your doctor if you take blood pressure or heart medicines, statins, blood thinners, or drugs with a narrow safety margin such as ciclosporin (cyclosporine) or other immunosuppressants
- Avoid if you are prone to low blood sugar
